Chicago Botanic Garden is Hiring a Staff Accountant Near Glencoe, IL

 

Title: Staff Accountant

Exemption Status: Exempt

Department: Accounting

Reports to: Sr. Director of Accounting

Year-round Full-time (hybrid – three days on-site/ two days remote)

Position Overview:

The staff accountant supports all strategic and programmatic matters as they relate to accounting, fiscal/grant compliance and budget management, and financial analysis for a variety of federal/ local and private grants.

Responsibilities

In this role you will be responsible for the following:

  • Directly work with program managers to monitor the complete life cycle of local, federal government, and private foundation grants, including but not limited to managing grant reporting deadlines, monitoring the budget/spending status of assigned grants, and ensuring requirements for monitoring and financial reporting are met for all federally funded grant programs as required by 2 CFR Part 200.
  • Participate in both the annual financial statement audit and single audit providing requested reporting and schedules.
  • Prepare, complete, submit and ensure accuracy and timeliness of all financial and close-out reports in assigned grant portfolio. Assist with management of grant award funding and communicate with sponsor on questions/issues.
  • Monitor compliance with federal regulations and spending of subcontracted agencies to ensure adherence to policies, procedures, and reporting requirements. Review subcontracted agencies’ financial reports and track payments to subcontracted agencies.
  • Collaborate with the team to ensure appropriate internal controls for the accounting department and the contracts and grants management function.
  • Effectively cross-train to perform tasks outside your regular duties and responsibilities to deepen an understanding of organizational functionality and support desired career goals.
  • Other duties as may reasonably be assigned by the senior director of Accounting to support the financial and grant management functions.

Qualifications

Our ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Bachelor of arts or bachelor of science degree in accounting, or a related field, or equivalent comparable experience.
  • One or more years of experience managing grants and nonprofit finances preferred, but not required.
  • Working knowledge of trial balance, profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and month-end processes.
  • Knowledge of accounting and reporting software (e.g., Financial Edge) as well as Office products; advanced knowledge of Excel preferred.

Physical Demands: 

Office setting. Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, listening, speaking, and keyboarding. Use of office equipment including computers, telephones, copiers, scanners, and fax machines. Some requirements for lifting, pushing, or pulling items less than 30 pounds.
